Recently there has been alot of talk about a "Whole House Dehumidifier" (aka Humidex, HumiVent, Bon Aire). The claim is that these units operate on pennies a day", however lets look closer at the claims.
They say these units will extract humidity from the lowest point of your dwelling, which is your basement floor. By extracting this moist cool air, warmer , drier air will be pulled down from upstairs.
When this "good air is pulled from upstairs it usually is good because it has been either heated in the winter or air conditioned in the summer. That being said these units fans operate for pennies a day however when you take into consideration the cost of operating your air conditioning along with one of these units, it is very expensive "like running air conditioning or heat while you have a basement vent and fan blowing this air outside. It is like running air conditioning while you have a window open.
In my professional opinion, I would recommend that you avoid these units, but rather install a SaniDry Basement Air System which operates on the principle of conditioning the existing basement air by a two stage filter and also an ultra efficient dehumidifier. The SaniDry will cost the same to run as a 35 pint dehumidifier (6.8 amps), while removing as much as 3 times the moisture, and you will save on your air conditioning costs because dry air is cheaper to cool than warm. moist air.
Don't be fooled into puffery claims that lead you to believe it is better to use a unit that operates on pennies a day. The initial cost of $1200.00 + for a unit that cost the dealer a total of no more than $400.00. This is a very high profit item for the company installing them but is not the best solution for your home, nor is it the most cost effective.
The SaniDry is so efficient it will pay for itself in energy savings in a very short time. You can get a color brochure on the SaniDry right here online or by calling 1-800-649-6140
