When thinking about redesigning your basement for a remodeling project, think Non-Organic Material.

Organic material such as wood, regular dry wall, popcorn ceilings and fabrics are all considered Organic. This means that if they come into contact with water and are exposed to mold spores, these spores can populate rapidly and over-run your basement. Mold repairs can be costly and difficult to do.

Non-Organic Materials such as stainless steel, Mold Tough Sheetrock from USG, Moisture resistant ceiling tiles and moisture resistant recycled PVC flooring can all be part of your basement design.

The main idea with your basement design is two parts:

1.) To get what you want and need out of the extra space

2.) To protect against moisture damage and future moisture problems by using materials that are designed to resist moisture.

By putting building materials that are susceptible to absorbing water, rotting and mold growth you are setting up your perfect design idea for ruin.

Design for Success with your basement and build with materials that are designed to withstand moisture and work perfectly in the basement environment.

Although solid hardwood expands and contracts with humidity changes, engineered wood can be an attractive alternative for moist basements. It's made of layers of wood bonded together under heat and pressure, so it handles humidity swings.
