I would like to install French Drains to deal with a ground water problem in my crawl space. I can only dig down about 5-6 inches into the sand until I hit water. Does anyone know any solutions to either make the groundwater level lower, or to brace the sand from caving in and filling with water as I dig? I do not think the French drains at 5-6 inches from the top would be effective enough. The space is tight so getting any type of machinery is not possible.

Tentboy:
Thanks for the posts, all five of them. Answer a few questions for me first.
1. Does the crawlspace ever flood?
If so, how deep?
2. Do you have a sump in it now?
3. How close to the water (the shore) are you, if at all?
4. Have you thought of CleanSpace encapsulation as a resolution (seen here on the website)?
Once you respond, I will advise.
