I am interested in a battery back-up pump system. I actually
went through the trouble of purchasing one along with the recommended
deep cycle marine battery. When I read the instructions and warnings, it
stated that these type of batteries emit a gas and also gave various
warnings about when the battery is charging. My issue here, is that I
have a gas furnace in my basement probably 10 feet or so from the sump pit. I have no idea if this was a probelm but I ended up not installing it
because I was afraid of a potential explosion. Is this truely an issue with
these systems or could they operate safely if there is a gas furnace in
the area? I find it hard to believe I cannot install a backup sump because
I use gas for heat and the hot water heater. Could you please educate me?

We have faced issues similar to this in tha past. We've even spoken to the battery manufacturer of our hgih grad BBU system and they assured us that there would not be an issue.

HOWEVER, without knowing exactly what you have, I can not speak for your equipment. 10 feet away should be an adequate distance. As long as there is some cross current of air in the room, there should not be any gas build up.
